In the event of any discrepancies between these Terms and the Rental Agreement, the Rental Agreement will prevail.
Eligibility Criteria
Renting a vehicle requires:
- To rent a vehicle from Shirley Car Hire, drivers must be at least 21 years old, though age restrictions may differ based on vehicle selection. A valid driving licence suitable for the chosen vehicle category is required, along with identification and proof of current address. Valid payment details and a security deposit must also be provided. Additional requirements may be outlined in the Rental Agreement.
3. Reservations and Payments
- Reservations can be arranged via our website, by telephone, or directly at our Dartford office. A deposit may be necessary to confirm your booking. The remaining balance and security deposit are usually payable upon vehicle pickup. All pricing is listed in British Pounds (£) and includes VAT where applicable. We accept major credit and debit cards, processed securely by trusted payment partners.
Vehicle Pick-Up and Drop-Off
- At the time of collection, it is your responsibility to conduct a thorough inspection of the vehicle and report any pre-existing damage right away. A vehicle condition report will be completed and both parties will sign it. The vehicle should be returned in the same condition as it was collected, acknowledging normal wear and tear. Any new damage will be evaluated and may result in additional charges. Ensure the vehicle is returned with the same fuel level as when you picked it up; otherwise, refueling charges will apply. Late returns could lead to extra fees, so please contact us immediately if you anticipate being late. You will be accountable for any parking fines, traffic violations, or costs incurred during your rental, alongside an administration fee.
Insurance and Responsibility
- All rentals include basic third-party insurance. Detailed coverage information and excess amounts can be found in the Rental Agreement. Additional insurance options may be available to help minimize your financial liability, and we encourage a thorough review of these options. You remain liable for any damage or loss up to the excess amount unless additional insurance covers it. Any damage resulting from negligence, misuse, or violations of these Terms will remain your responsibility, regardless of existing insurance.
6. Modifications and Cancellations
Cancellation and amendment policies differ based on the type of booking and the notice period provided. For precise information, please consult your booking confirmation or Rental Agreement. Be aware that late cancellations or no-shows could incur additional charges.
7. Restricted Activities
Prohibited Vehicle Uses
- The vehicle must not be used for any illegal activities, including racing, rallying, or off-road driving. It is prohibited to transport hazardous materials or sub-let the vehicle to others. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly forbidden. Users must adhere to passenger and weight limits and cannot operate the vehicle outside the agreed geographical area without prior consent.
Breach of these terms may lead to rental cancellation and extra fees.
8. Liability Restrictions
To the fullest extent allowed by English and Welsh law, Shirley Car Hire will not be responsible for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, including loss of profits, data, or business resulting from your use of our services. Our maximum liability for any claims is limited to the total rental amount you paid in the last 12 months. This limitation does not apply to liability for death or personal injury due to negligence or fraud.

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Disputes will be handled exclusively by the courts in this jurisdiction.
